This workshop series provides a comprehensive introduction to Artificial Intelligence (AI) with a focus on its growing influence in the social good sector. As AI continues to evolve, it is increasingly being applied to address critical global challenges, from combating climate change to improving healthcare and advancing gender equality. However, along with its transformative potential, AI also brings new ethical concerns about bias, privacy, and unintended consequences. In this series, participants will explore the history of AI, its current applications, and the importance of developing AI systems that are responsible, fair, and aligned with human values.
Participants will also dive into AI’s role in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through case studies that showcase AI-driven innovations in areas such as environmental sustainability, clean water, and public health. Special attention will be given to how AI is being used in Canada, including insights from experts in the field. Through interactive discussions, practical exercises, and guest speakers, this series equips attendees with the tools to engage with AI thoughtfully and responsibly, and provides a framework for applying AI to create meaningful, positive change within their organizations and communities.
Understanding what AI is, how it works, and how AI models impact our world, is a first step to AI literacy. In this workshop, we will learn about the history of AI, where it is today and future possibilities. We will dive into a discussion of innovation and the importance of intentional and responsible AI. We will explore Chatbots and prompts, and warm up our critical thinking skills. And wrap up with a discussion and continued learning opportunities.
AI has incredible potential for tackling local and global issues like climate change and gender equality. However, its potential is only possible when we weigh its risks and negative impacts on our planet and people. We will jump into learning about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and explore case studies on AI for Good. We will also welcome a special guest and speaker from Canada’s Ocean Supercluster to hear how Canada is using AI to address sustainable seafood, clean water, and protect our oceans. And, to wrapup, we will try out an AI for Good framework for our organization.
The world is changing fast! When ChatGPT launched into the world in November 2022, it took us all by surprise - including governments. In this workshop, we’ll learn about the topline considerations for Canadian policymakers and how to engage the government on issues that matter to us. We will learn about different public policy frameworks, and how to choose what’s right for our organization. Using an AI tool, we will each write a public policy brief for our organization and discuss its strengths and weaknesses together. |
